UPDATE 10/16/2015 – The 72 hour challenge goal was met! Together with the community, Leks recieved approximately ~1,150 Euro in funding, including the $500 match!
I want to tell you a story about a friend of mine and if it resonates with you, ask you to lend a small hand in one of a couple of different ways. I want to tell you about my friend Bob Cornelissen and his wife, Lek.
All the things I love about Bob and Lek have nothing to do with the technical stuff that introduced Bob and I many years ago. Bob, a long time Microsoft MVP from The Netherlands and his wife, who is a native of Thailand, have done something amazing. While on holiday in Thailand, they discovered the clearing of land of housing to make way for a shopping mall was going to leave a large group of homeless dogs completely exposed, with no place to go. These were not just any dogs. They animals are the aged, injured, sick and victimized who need help more than any others. Seeing these animals in need, Bob and Lek immediately knew they needed to help. And help is what they did, building a dog sanctuary adjacent to Lek’s family home. Lek’s House of Tails.
Paul McCartney said, “You can judge a man’s true character by the way he treats his fellow animals”. In describing Lek and Bob, I don’t think I can improve upon that. Compassion through action of this scale absolutely astounds me. As Bob works in the Netherlands and supports his wife’s efforts half way around the world, they never complain about the challenges of their circumstances. They just focus on the job at hand.
A 72 hour challenge…
Life for Lauren and I has been a truly amazing adventure. Through my work in the Microsoft community over the last 10 years, we have made friends on four continents. Ask us what we value most about the Microsoft community? The answer is simple; the truly incredible people we have come to know in this time, who have altered not only the course of our lives, but our understanding of the world in the process. When you visit with folks from Bulgaria to Basel, from Austria to Australia on a daily basis, the world seems very small and familiar. Our friends make almost every place we visit feel like home.
In celebration of 10 years of collaboration and friendship with a fantastic group of people, Lauren and I are going to spend our spare time and funds in 2016 supporting and bring attention to great people working for several deserving causes around the world that touch our hearts. Lek’s House of Tails is the first of these.
On behalf of our friends and family in the Microsoft community, at long-time partners like Veeam, and friends at Cireson (the company today I happily call home), we are going to match all donations to Lek’s House of Tails dollar-for-dollar up to $500 USD over a 72 hour period this week. That means if Lek’s sees $500 in donations this week, we’ll double it, for a total of $1,000.
